About: Gateway or Gateway to Language and Learning
Gateway to Language and Learning© (most often referred to as "Gateway") is a series of core word page sets that supports the language learning needs of young children and facilitates efficient communication for the competent communicator.
Gateway© is a research-based core word vocabulary designed by Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP.
There is consistency in the design of all Vocabulary Levels to enable a user to seamlessly move across grid sizes (e.g. 5*6, 6*9, etc.) or advance to the next level of complexity (e.g., Developing Language to Advanced Communicator) while maintaining ones level of communicative competence.
The underlying philosophy of Gateway is to enable effective and efficient communication. All individuals need to be able to say what they want to say, when they want to say it, and to be able to do so with a minimum of effort. Within Gateway, effective communication is achieved by providing AAC users access to a high frequency core vocabulary and fringe vocabulary that is selected to match a user’s age, needs, interests, and linguistic abilities. Efficient communication is achieved by minimizing the number of key selections required to speak each word. The Gateway vocabulary was organized to give the user access to its core vocabulary using an average of less than 1.5 key selections per word.
Gateway page sets for Mind Express 5 include a section with information, directions, links to tutorials that can be accessed from Dictionary>Settings>Help.

Gateway page sets available for Mind Express 5:
- Gateway 20 targets preschool and school-aged children who are communicating using 1-2 word messages. They can recognize symbols of nouns, verbs and some adjectives and adverbs. These emerging communicators have the potential to improve their expressive language abilities.
- Gateway 40 is designed to meet the needs of school-aged children who are learning to combine symbols to form multi-word messages. These users have the potential to learn to use word endings, articles and prepositions and to create syntactically complex sentences. This page set is constructed to facilitate teaching of these language structures within an intervention context.
- Gateway 120 Advanced Communicator (120 AC) is designed for advanced or linguistically competent individuals needing an efficient and powerful core vocabulary to engage in routine dialogues and compete in an educational or work setting. It is a logical next step for children using the Developing Language Vocabulary, who now require a more mature vocabulary and greater efficiency in message generation. Gateway's Dynamic Morphology feature enables users to rapidly create messages using an average of less than 1.2 key selections per word. Mind Express features have been integrated into this page set to support personal and remote communication.
- Gateway 120 Developing Language (120 DL) is designed for children acquiring language following the typical sequence of language development. It can benefit children who are learning to combine symbols to form multi-word messages as well as those beginning to form syntactically correct sentences. It contains HOME and SCHOOL CORE pages that seamlessly link to relevant topical vocabulary enabling active participation in the classroom. Semantic Power Strips enable users to access related vocabulary without scrolling through pages or complex arrays. Mind Express features have been integrated into this page set to support many advanced reading, writing, and academic tasks.
Where to find and import Gateway page sets in Mind Express 5:
(Important Note: You will have to purchase a Gateway license after the 30 days free trial period ends to continue using Gateway page sets if you have not already purchased a Gateway license.)
- Log in as a user in Mind Express 5.
- Select Menu > Import.
- Click From Mind Express sharing website in the Import screen.
- Select Symbol communication in the From Mind Express sharing website screen.
- Perform a search for Gateway page sets or scroll down or up in the Symbol communication page sets list until you find a Gateway page set that you want to import in the From Mind Express sharing website screen.
- Select the Gateway page set(s) that you want to import into the current Mind Express 5 user and click Import.
What is needed to permanently run Gateway page sets in Mind Express 5?
A license to activate the Gateway page sets created by Jabbla and Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP in Mind Express 5.
Hardware Requirements:
- Operating System: Microsoft Windows® 10
- Processor: Intel x86 compatible
- RAM: 2GB or more
- Free Hard Disk Space: 2GB or more
Software Requirements:
- Mind Express 5 (1 User) permanent web license
Symbol Requirements:
- SymbolStix (NOTE: Included with Mind Express 5 (1 User) permanent web license at no extra cost.)
Other Requirements:
- You will need to submit your Mind Express 5 (1 User) permanent web license serial number from Menu > Help to purchase a Gateway (1 User) license.
- The Windows 10 PC will need to have access to the Internet or World Wide Web to be able to properly activate the single user Gateway page sets license in Mind Express 5.

- It will take approximately 1 to 3 business days to receive a Gateway single user license confirmation activation email after purchasing it from this website.
- This license is only for Gateway page sets imported into Mind Express 5 that are created by Jabbla and Joan Bruno, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, not Mind Express 5.
How to find the serial number in Mind Express 5:
- Launch and sign in to Mind Express 5 on your Windows 10 PC.
- Choose a user in Mind Express 5.
- Select Menu > Help in Mind Express 5.
- The serial number for Mind Express 5 will appear in the Help window. The serial number will begin with ME.
How to verify your Gateway single user license has been activated in a Mind Express 5 (1 User) permanent web license after purchase.
- Launch and sign into Mind Express 5 on your Windows 10 PC with access to the Internet. (Note: You need to sign in to Mind Express 5 with the same serial number that you entered to purchase Gateway on this website.)
- Choose a user in Mind Express 5.
- Select Menu > Settings > System > License in Mind Express 5.
- In License information, Activated pagesets should include Gateway.

- It usually takes 1 to 3 business days to receive a Gateway activation confirmation email for your submitted Mind Express 5 (1 User) permanent web license serial number after purchasing it.
